"Nigh-on Unbeatable" Turntable Based on the World Renown Michell GyroDec
The Michell Gyro SE is a variation of the world renown GyroDec turntable design. For the Gyro SE, Michell did away with the full-size acrylic plinth and hinged lid of the Gyrodec, replacing them with a single acrylic "spyder" to support the turntable. This was done to reduce the overall size of the GyroDec and create a smaller, more compact turntable.
The Gyro SE is available with or without the Michell TecnoArm 2 Tonearm and is available in your choice of black or silver finish.
"It’s a powerful package of fine sound, peerless build and finish and genuine upgradeability," raves England's Hi-fi World magazine. "It’s nigh-on unbeatable."
"The gains in detail, space and neutrality... made the extra insight available with the Gyro SE a worthwhile trade," notes Hi-Fi News and Record Review.
Three-point Spring Suspension System
Using Michell's innovative three-point spring suspension system, three suspension towers are fixed to the Gyro SE's acrylic base to hold the suspension springs in place and provide height adjustment for the sub-chassis.
Hanging from these three suspension springs, a weighted pendulum-style sub-chassis provides a rigid dense platform to mount the main bearing, platter and tonearm assembly. This sophisticated approach ensures that there is no movement between them, while also acting as a resonance and vibration "sink," drawing away unwanted vibrations from the sensitive elements of the turntable.
Impedance-Matched Platter with Solid Brass Weights
The impedance-matched platter uses material that was chosen for its vibration dampening characteristics. Sonically it is constructed from a very similar material to vinyl and therefore has a very neutral sound characteristic. Brass weights are added to give the platter extra mass and subsequently more momentum when spinning. This greatly improves speed stability and helps keep wow and flutter to an absolute minimum.
Inverted Oil-Circulating Main Bearing
Michell goes its own way whenever highest performance is at stake. Contrary to traditional designs, the main bearing for the platter has the point of rotation at the top of the assembly rather than at the bottom. This orientation allows Michell to fully lubricate the inside of the entire bearing while the platter is turning. This is achieved using a modified Archimedean screw that is machined into the inside bore of the bearing.
The oil is drawn from a reservoir at the base of the main bearing up to the thrust ball at the top, fully lubricating as it goes. The oil then returns to the reservoir via a waste hole drilled into the bearing spindle. Lubricating the precision parts of the main bearing in this way means that any potential for noise or vibration created by the rotation of the platter is avoided.
Freestanding Motor Unit
The motor unit used to drive the turntable is completely separate from the turntable, meaning it doesn’t touch the turntable in anyway. The only connection between the motor and the turntable is the belt that drives the platter. This stops any noise or vibrations created by the motor reaching the sensitive parts of the turntable.
Low Contact-Area Feet
The solid aluminum feet of the turntable are shaped so that the area in contact with the supporting surface is very small. This is done to minimize the transfer of vibrations from the supporting furniture into the turntable.
Optional Michell TecnoArm 2 Tonearm
You can order the Gyro SE with or without an optional Michell TecnoArm 2 tonearm. The TecnoArm 2 is designed to offer a truly audiophile listening experience at exceptional value for money and easily competes with tonearms at three times the price! It utilizes a custom one-piece arm tube. The tube is shot-blasted to make it more rigid, and then 22 holes are drilled in the underside to reduce mass. The underside of the integral head shell is machined to be perfectly parallel with the bearing position. The tonearm is then assembled using new ultra-low friction polymer bearings and fixed to a redesigned mounting base.
The TecnoArm 2 is wired with Michell's proprietary wiring loom, using 99.9999% pure silver litz wire, from cartridge tags to phono plugs, with no internal wiring joints. The TecnoWeight counterweight allows you to set the tracking force for your chosen cartridge easily, and Michell's new VTA/SRA adjuster sets the height of your tonearm, helping you ensure the stylus tracks the vinyl groove at the correct angle.
