"Nigh-on Unbeatable" Turntable with New T8 Tonearm Plus Clamp and Dustcover
The Michell Gyro SE is a variation of the world renown GyroDec turntable design. For the Gyro SE, Michell did away with the full-size acrylic plinth and hinged lid of the Gyrodec, replacing them with a single acrylic "spyder" to support the turntable. This was done to reduce the overall size of the GyroDec and create a smaller, more compact turntable.
So, what's this special "Bundle" edition all about? Included with the Gyro SE is the brand new Michell T8 tonearm, record clamp, and UnicCover, all at a special package price!
Award-Winning Performance
The Gyro SE snagged a Reviewer's Choice Award from Part-Time Audiophile in Graig Neville's June 30, 2024 review.
"The Gyro SE elevated my expectations of what to look for in future turntables. $7,000 is serious dosh to spend on a table without a cartridge, but in this reviewer’s opinion, what you get for your money is a level of built quality, refinement, and smoothness that is worth the money. Definitely recommended."
"Five Stars" Review
England's What Hi-Fi? magazine gave the Gyro SE its top rating of Five Stars in a November 20, 2024 review. "Michell’s Gyro SE turntable delivers a beautifully balanced, subtle and organic sound that charms easily."
"The Michell Gyro SE is an elegant, talented turntable that does its legacy proud. It retains the musical character of the classic GyroDec, with refinements and upgrades that enhance the performance even further to create a truly stunning deck. The design and build quality of the Gyro SE remain rather special, and it’s as visually arresting as the original was in the ‘80s."
"Five Stars" Revisited
And proving that brilliant engineering, construction, and design are timeless, another Five Star What Hi-Fi? magazine review dates all the way back to 2008. "This Gyrodec can pack a sublime punch – its even, cohesive and fluid sound makes listening a pleasure."
"The Gyrodec gives lovely evenness in its soundscape, with no fighting between the treble, midrange and bass. With treble-heavy songs such as The Beatles' 'What You're Doing,' there's no hint of stridency. Indeed, sonically, the Gyrodec SE is right up there with the best."
"You Won't Regret the Purchase"
"If you have the opportunity to hear one, be sure to give it a spin before you buy anything in the under $10K price point," observes Michael Fremer in his review for trackingangle.com, July 28, 2023. "In a better world I'd have all the competition to compare it to and report back, but I don't. That said, I'm pretty confident saying if you choose the Gyro SE you won't regret the purchase."
"While far more costly and higher performance turntables were in the room, not once did I feel I was paying a sonic price because the Gyro SE did so much right and really didn't do anything wrong."
A Powerful Package of Fine Sound
"It’s a powerful package of fine sound, peerless build and finish and genuine upgradeability," raves England's Hi-fi World magazine. "It’s nigh-on unbeatable."
"The gains in detail, space and neutrality... made the extra insight available with the Gyro SE a worthwhile trade," notes Hi-Fi News and Record Review.
Three-point Spring Suspension System
Using Michell's innovative three-point spring suspension system, three suspension towers are fixed to the Gyro SE's acrylic base to hold the suspension springs in place and provide height adjustment for the sub-chassis.
Hanging from these three suspension springs, a weighted pendulum-style sub-chassis provides a rigid dense platform to mount the main bearing, platter and tonearm assembly. This sophisticated approach ensures that there is no movement between them, while also acting as a resonance and vibration "sink," drawing away unwanted vibrations from the sensitive elements of the turntable.
Impedance-Matched Platter with Solid Brass Weights
The impedance-matched platter uses material that was chosen for its vibration dampening characteristics. Sonically it is constructed from a very similar material to vinyl and therefore has a very neutral sound characteristic. Brass weights are added to give the platter extra mass and subsequently more momentum when spinning. This greatly improves speed stability and helps keep wow and flutter to an absolute minimum.
Inverted Oil-Circulating Main Bearing
Michell goes its own way whenever highest performance is at stake. Contrary to traditional designs, the main bearing for the platter has the point of rotation at the top of the assembly rather than at the bottom. This orientation allows Michell to fully lubricate the inside of the entire bearing while the platter is turning. This is achieved using a modified Archimedean screw that is machined into the inside bore of the bearing.
The oil is drawn from a reservoir at the base of the main bearing up to the thrust ball at the top, fully lubricating as it goes. The oil then returns to the reservoir via a waste hole drilled into the bearing spindle. Lubricating the precision parts of the main bearing in this way means that any potential for noise or vibration created by the rotation of the platter is avoided.
Freestanding Motor Unit
The motor unit used to drive the turntable is completely separate from the turntable, meaning it doesn’t touch the turntable in anyway. The only connection between the motor and the turntable is the belt that drives the platter. This stops any noise or vibrations created by the motor reaching the sensitive parts of the turntable.
Low Contact-Area Feet
The solid aluminum feet of the turntable are shaped so that the area in contact with the supporting surface is very small. This is done to minimize the transfer of vibrations from the supporting furniture into the turntable.
Includes Michell T8 Tonearm
This special Bundle Edition of the Gyro SE includes the superb T8 tonearm. No need to order a tonearm separately or install one of your own!
The T8 is a class leading tonearm, capable of retrieving even more information from your beloved vinyl collection. The T8 is a big step up in performance from the critically acclaimed Michell T2 arm. It boasts a new aluminum vertical bearing housing, redesigned sleeve, and vertical bearing shaft, now both made of stainless-steel.
These improvements mean stability and overall rigidity have been vastly improved over the T2, controlling unwanted vibration, movement and resonance to a higher degree.
The T8 tonearm utilizes precision hand matched bearing assemblies and a highly advanced arm tube design, giving even fewer points of possible resonance.
Wired with low mass copper internal wiring, bespoke low capacitance phono cables, and high-quality phono plugs, this is truly a class leading tonearm, capable of retrieving even more information from your beloved vinyl collection.
Includes Michell Record Clamp
Get better sound from your vinyl by clamping it to the platter, evening out unwanted undulations and reducing resonance in the vinyl itself.
Included in the Gyro SE "Bundle" is Michell's black Delrin record clamp with anodized aluminum knob for use on the GyroDec, TecnoDec, or third-party turntables. This seemingly unassuming accessory goes a long way toward helping you achieve the best playback performance from the superb Gyro SE.
Includes UniCover Turntable Cover
Also included with the "Bundle" is the cleverly designed UniCover. This low-profile turntable cover keeps the essential parts of your turntable dust free, including the platter and tonearm. A quality cover like the UniCover helps your turntable stay in top condition between LP playback sessions.
"They Have It Exactly Right"
"The build quality is extremely high and it requires so little maintenance to keep running at the highest level of playback. Michell has tinkered with this design for years and it feels like they have it exactly right," reports Ian White, ecoustics.com, September 7, 2024.
"It delivers the weight, resolution, clarity, rhythm, delicacy, and tone that can make listening to vinyl so emotionally rewarding."
Striking Good Looks
And let's not ever forget those striking good looks. Writing in teitteringmachines.com, analog gear Michael Lavorgna notes the following.
"To my eyes, the Michell Gyro SE is a thing of beauty in every way—from material choice, to design, to build quality which strikes me as fairly astounding given its price. I will be talking about how it sounds in the not too distant future. Right now, I find myself just looking throughout the day to see how the changing light makes a movie in shadows."
