The Stylus 10 — The Same Elliptical Tip, Tracking Lighter

Ortofon's replacement stylus for the OM 10, supplied on its own. It carries an elliptical diamond at an 8/18 µm radius and clips onto the front of an OM body in a few seconds.

Against the rung below it, the visible difference is not the diamond but the suspension. The Stylus 10 is specified to track at 1.5 g rather than 1.75 g, which asks less of the record for the same job.

This is the matched stylus for the Ortofon OM 10. Ortofon covers the whole family in a single user guide headed “OM & Concorde MkI,” which is the clearest statement of what shares this mount: the OM bodies and the original Concorde take the same styli.

That shared mount is why an OM body outlives several styli. Whatever is fitted now, the cartridge underneath will accept whatever you fit next, with no change to alignment and no trip back to the protractor.

Ortofon quotes an 8/18 µm elliptical tip, dynamic lateral compliance of 20 µm/mN, tracking ability of 60 µm at 315 Hz, and a frequency response of 20 Hz – 20 kHz held within +3/–3 dB across the band.

Tracking force is 1.25 to 1.75 g with 1.5 g recommended. Coming from an OM 5E that figure drops by a quarter of a gram, so the arm does need resetting — this is the one adjustment people skip and then wonder why the balance changed.

What tracking force should I set?

Ortofon specifies 1.25 to 1.75 g and recommends 1.5 g. If you are coming from a 5E, that is a real change from 1.75 g and the arm must be reset.

Can I move further up the range later?

You can. The OM body accepts every stylus in the family, so any future step is a stylus purchase — the cartridge, the headshell and the alignment all stay as they are.

How long does a stylus last?

Around 1,000 hours is the usual figure, though it turns on how clean your records are and how accurately the cartridge is set up. A worn tip damages records, so replace it on schedule rather than by ear.
