A Simple, Proven Way to Start (or Return to) Vinyl
The Rega Planar 1 is a 2-speed belt-drive turntable built to make vinyl playback simple. Its Rega Carbon moving-magnet cartridge comes mounted and aligned at the factory, and the RB110 tonearm has preset bias built in, so there's no anti-skate dial to fuss with during setup.
A 24-volt low-noise motor, phenolic-resin platter, and precision brass main bearing give the Planar 1 a stable base to build on. It's fully manual — you lower the stylus and return the tonearm yourself — and has no built-in phono preamp, so it needs an MM phono input or a separate phono stage.
Where the Factory-Fitted Cartridge Earns Its Keep
A Factory-Mounted Rega Carbon Cartridge
The Carbon is a moving-magnet cartridge with a conical stylus on a carbon cantilever, a design chosen for being easy to live with and forgiving of small setup differences rather than for outright resolution.
The stylus can be replaced without removing the cartridge from the tonearm, and Rega's optional Carbon Pro stylus offers a bonded elliptical diamond upgrade for better groove tracking whenever you're ready for it.
An RB110 Tonearm Built for Simple Setup
The hand-assembled RB110 tonearm uses Rega-designed low-friction bearings and a stiff aluminum arm tube. Its preset bias removes the anti-skate adjustment entirely, and the cartridge already arrives mounted and aligned.
Setup is placing the platter, sliding on the supplied balance weight, removing the stylus guard, and connecting to your system. The fixed headshell trades quick cartridge swaps for extra rigidity, a deliberate Rega tradeoff.
What Reviewers Are Saying
What Hi-Fi? called the current Planar 1 "a spritely, entertaining turntable with no obvious flaws," praising its detail and rhythmic, expressive sound while noting it's easy to put together.
Who Is the Rega Planar 1 Best For?
- Your first real hi-fi turntable: the factory-fitted cartridge and preset tonearm bias make setup close to foolproof
- You want a genuinely award-winning entry-level deck: What Hi-Fi? named the Planar 1 its Best Turntable in its price class at both the 2024 and 2025 Awards
- You want a stylus you can replace or upgrade later: swap the worn Carbon stylus, or step up to the Carbon Pro, without removing the cartridge itself
- You already have (or plan to add) a phono stage: the Planar 1 has no built-in phono preamp, so it needs an MM phono input on your amp, or a separate Phono preamplifiers
- You want electronic speed change or automatic operation: the Planar 1 is fully manual with belt-driven speed change, so if that matters more than price, the Planar 1 Plus or Planar 2 is the better starting point
How Does It Connect to Your System?
The attached RCA cable runs from the tonearm to your amplifier's MM phono input, or to a separate phono preamp if your amp doesn't have one built in. Never connect the Planar 1 straight into a standard line-level or AUX input.
Setup is quick: place the platter and mat, slide the balance weight fully onto the tonearm as shown in the quick-start guide, remove the stylus guard, and connect. No bias adjustment is needed since it's preset at the factory.
Pairs Well With
What finishes the system around a Rega Planar 1:
- Phono preamplifiers — required if your amplifier has no built-in MM phono input
- Integrated amplifiers — look for one with a built-in MM phono stage to skip a separate box
- Turntable accessories — mats, levels, and clamps for getting the most from this setup
- Audio racks — a firm, level, vibration-free shelf a turntable actually needs
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Carbon cartridge already installed?
Yes. Rega mounts and aligns it at the factory, and the RB110 tonearm's preset bias means there's no anti-skate adjustment to make during setup.
Does the Planar 1 have a built-in phono preamp?
It doesn't. Connect it to an MM phono input, or add a separate moving-magnet phono preamp. The Planar 1 Plus is the Rega model with a phono stage built in.
Can I replace or upgrade the stylus?
Yes. The Carbon stylus can be replaced without removing the cartridge, and Rega's Carbon Pro bonded elliptical stylus is a direct drop-in upgrade.
How do I change from 33⅓ to 45 rpm?
Lift off the platter and move the drive belt to the other step on the motor pulley. The Planar 1 doesn't have electronic speed selection.
Does the tonearm return automatically when a record ends?
It doesn't. The Planar 1 is fully manual, so you lower the stylus at the start of a record and lift the tonearm back yourself when it's done.
