"The Best Amplifier That I Have Ever Heard"
Woo Audio's WA5 is a superb sounding vacuum tube integrated amplifier with the exquisite headphone stage that you would expect from Woo.
Handcrafted in New York since 2008, the latest 2015 edition of Woo Audio’s WA5 headphone amp and integrated amp is a prominent example of trickle down technology. Woo Audio’s engineers were able to apply much of the no-compromise design philosophy from its flagship product, the WA234 MONO, which is the world’s first dual chassis monoblock stereo headphone amp and integrated amp.
Independent Headphone and Speaker Circuitry
Like its flagship big brother, the WA234 MONO, the WA5 relies an all-tube design for its exquisite sound quality, utilizing the 6SN7 tube for the driver, a 300B tube for power, and a 274B tube for the rectifier. The WA5 provides up to 8 watts of power output into four-pin XLR and 1/4” stereo headphone outputs and to a pair of WBT Nextgen 0710-Cu speaker terminals. For best sound quality, the WA5 uses independent headphone and speaker circuits.
Inputs consist of one pair of balanced XLR connections and two pairs of WBT Nextgen 0210-Cu unbalanced RCA inputs.
"A Work of Art"
"Put simply the WA5 is the best amplifier that I have ever heard," raves Paddy Carroll in a headphone.guru review for June 10, 2015. "Its beautiful aesthetics and military build are nothing short of breathtaking. Finally I have an amplifier that satisfies all my listening needs and I am confident that it will give me many years of satisfaction."
"It is a work of art; it is both magnificent to look at and a true reference amplifier. Whether I was listening to headphones or to speakers, there were no shortcomings," reports Frank Iacone, Part-Time Audiophile in his December 13, 2013 review of the earlier iteration of the WA5.
'Premium Parts' Make It More Perfect
The WA5 uses audiophile-grade ultra premium internal parts that bring it up to the highest possible performance level. These consist of V-Cap input coupling caps (matched pair 0.15uf/600V), Blackgate bypass 6SN7 cathode caps (150uf/350V), Jensen decoupling caps (100u/500V), and Jensen voltage filtering caps (220uf/450V).
High Power and Configurability
Thanks to its high power and its configurability, the WA5 will drive any pair of headphones you can realistically expect to find anywhere on the planet, and it will make them sound their absolute best.
The marquee feature of the WA5 consists of user-selectable High/Low Power, High/Low Impedance, and High/Low level Output switches located on the front panel. Using these switches in conjunction allows you to precisely optimize the synergy between your headphone amplifier and headphones to achieve the ideal pairing. With the WA5, the glorious, sweet sound of the 300B vacuum tube has never been so accessible or so versatile.
Single-ended Triode Class A Design
The WA5 uses a single-ended triode, Class A, output transformer-coupled design for clean, clean, lush, and lifelike audio. The highly regulated power supply uses a pair of 274B tubes to provide the ultimate in quiet performance that can only be achieved with this kind of meticulous design.
All-Tube Design
Unlike many so-called vacuum tube headphone amps that are actually a hybrid design and use a tube to sweeten a solid state design, the WA5 takes a purist approach. It uses a 100-percent all tube design, relying on discrete components rather than transistors and ICs and with point-to-point wiring. This is audio done the Golden Age, old school way, but with state-of-the art sensibilities for premium performance with any source material, whether you listen to vinyl or like to stream hi-res digital music files.
Inputs consist of one pair of balanced XLRs and one pair of unbalanced RCAs.
